Ludwig Joseph Weber was born on October 16, 1898 in St. George, Minnesota. He earned his B.S. in 1920, Ch.E. in 1920 and Ph.D. in 1924, all from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Weber joined the staff of the University of Minnesota in 1921 as an assistant in chemistry. He was promoted to instructor in the School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1923. The School of Mines was established by the Board of Regents in 1888, officially opening in 1892 under the leadership of Professor William R. Appleby. Originally, the school was under the auspices of the College of Engineering, Metallurgy and the Mechanical Arts, but in 1897, the School of the Mines became an independent college, with Professor Appleby as dean.
